Creating Calm in the Classroom

The task: Transform two tired small teaching rooms into spaces that donโ€™t feel like classrooms and feel homely to promote a sense of calm. Our expertise has always been turning empty properties into warm and inviting homes, but this time, we brought that same skill into a school setting.

Why Calm Matters

Schools can be busy, colourful and noisy places, and that can make it hard for children to focus and feel at ease. We wanted these rooms to become oases of calm; spaces where pupils could learn, recharge, and feel supported.

The Design Approach

Our in-house interior designer, Marie Pocock, led the transformation. She chose a muted sage green palette, a colour widely recognised for its calming and focusing qualities. This soothing backdrop was paired with thoughtfully selected furniture, soft textures, plants, and soft, layered lighting to create a warm, homely feel. The lighting was key to reducing the harshness of standard classroom fluorescents, making the rooms feel more intimate and inviting.

The Psychology of Colour

Muted greens are more than just aesthetically pleasing; they have a powerful psychological impact on learning environments:

  • Calm & Focus: Green promotes calm, reduces stress and fatigue, and improves focus and memory.
  • Nature Connection: Its association with growth and nature creates a restorative atmosphere, helping children feel balanced and less anxious.

By using green thoughtfully, we created spaces that encourage concentration and emotional wellbeing.

The Result

With fresh eco-friendly paint, greenery, soft lighting, and clever layout planning, we turned two tired classrooms into warm, tranquil spaces that promote emotional wellbeing and focus. These rooms now feel less like traditional classrooms and more like safe, nurturing environments.

What the School Says:

โ€œThe team initially approached us to see if we had any rooms that needed a makeover, before ensuring that the design process, redecoration and installation was carefully and thoughtfully carried out to give the children of Cheam Park Farm the most amazing of spaces.

A huge thank you to the team at Roomservice by CORT for creating such wonderful spaces for our pupils. We have now been inspired to continue this work across other areas of the school.โ€
